What is one to do when we are stuck? Where do we go when we study so much and do so many “good” things that it seems like you are missing something? In my search for meaning and acceptance and accomplishment, I am drawn to the point of everything I say and do. Everything culminates in Getting to Know God.
The entire Bible, from beginning to end, is about knowing God. He tells us about Himself on every page. Every story, every event, everything points to knowing God. He tells us about Himself through His actions, love, words, and relationships. Jesus is His showing of Himself in physical form. He is perfection and the glory of God. He shows us Who He is to those whose spiritual hearing has been so dulled that they can only “hear” Him by seeing Him in His Son.
There is so many things that we try to find in the Bible. We try to find ways of self-improvement as an attempt to “do better” or “be better”. We try to find relief from our guilt and shame for the sins and iniquities that we have committed. Or maybe we are trying to get approval. It is like we are trying to feel like we’ve done “good things” possibly negating what we’ve done in the past. It seems like we are searching for a road map to tell us specific steps toward the “reward” of everlasting life. However, the entirety of the Bible and life is to know God. We are made for relationship.
This task to know God is the priority of priorities. This is the point of the Bible. The Bible is our only point of learning physically. The Holy Spirit is the only point of learning spiritually. And the Holy Spirit points to God. He states what He knows, and He knows God. Let us learn about God. Let us learn that He is love. He is utterly holy. He is here and everywhere all at once. He is three in One. He is righteous and just and merciful and faithful and all-knowing. He became human but is infinite, far beyond our comprehension, incapable of being fully expressed through written books (John 21:25).
All of the attributes of God fit together into a perfect whole. His traits of faithfulness and justice and mercy all fit together. They give us a true picture of God. He is showing Himself to us. He knows us fully. And He chose to show to us Himself fully. He has given us all that we could possibly grasp. He is infinite. So we can’t understand the sheer vastness of Him, but we can get all of what we can. And what we can get is in the Bible.
I am going to work to go through the His attributes, His characteristics, His descriptions, and His revealings of Himself to us. I am going to try to learn Who He is. He is amazing and loving and all-powerful. I want to get to know Him more. He has shown Himself to us to know Him more. This is an attempt to strengthen my relationship with Him. This is my priority of priorities. Will you learn with me?
Gotta go fill up my cup…..
