Divisions in the Home

This morning has been hectic, but most mornings are. This got me thinking about various characteristics of my household members. Some of us are literal slugs in the morning. But when it comes to the night time, we can’t seem to quiet ourselves down enough to sleep until the wee hours of the morning. The others of us pop up out of bread like freshly toasted bread from the toaster. Their mornings consist of quick and deliberate movements in their daily routine moving around us slugs to ready themselves for the day. They leave for where ever they have to go with a smile on their faces and a pep in their step. However when it comes to the night time hours, they are yawning by sundown and taking big stretches. They are now the slugs that those of us that were slowly gaining traction in the morning are now full steam ahead. We move around the house finishing chores and getting things ready for the next day because we know that our time to change into slugs will be upon us before we know it. Until then, we enjoy the energy and take advantage of it while we can. After the others are in bed, we finish up our tasks, shower, ready our things for the morning, and lay down in bed only to find ourselves thinking about our day. We think and think until we finally fall asleep an hour or two later. Then the process starts over again. Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Another one of the divisions in our home is TV time. Some of us can’t seem to get enough entertainment via the television screen. Others of us don’t mind if it is off all day. I am definitely of the later group. I don’t pay any mind to the television at all until someone turns it on. And even then, I am up doing household chores, crocheting, or reading instead of watching the television. My husband, however, is an avid television watcher. He loves movies, sporting events, and all types of sitcoms, especially the ones from the late 1990’s. The first thing that he does, usually, in the morning is turn on the television to some sports channel that has two to five people talking about what happened in football, basketball, and baseball among other topics. He is a morning person and not a night owl. He is usually yawning and stretching by the time he gets home from work. He watches television while he eats dinner, and then falls asleep while the television is still on. My sons take after their father when it comes to TV time. Hopefully as they grow and mature, they get into a little bit of reading at least. They do have a cut off time from screens, but they don’t like it. They are used to it, though. Are you a TV person?

The final division in our household that I want to discuss is when we take showers. I like to take my showers at night right before bed. It just feels good to wash the day away down the drain and go to bed completely clean. I also start a load of laundry right before bed so that I can put it in the dryer in the morning and know that I have done at least one thing on my list of chores for the day before the guys head out. The guys don’t really get a choice. I am a morning slug so they have to take their showers at night. However, given the chance, my youngest likes to take his showers in the morning like his father. My husband is of the mindset that it wakes him up and refreshes him so he is ready for the day. Remember, he is a morning person. So he is amped up and ready to go. Do you shower in the morning or the evening?

These household differences don’t do anything to engage arguing or fighting. However, they do allow for us to express ourselves and be true to ourselves. We are safe at home and we can be completely raw and real at home with no judgment or persecution. That is what home is and should be. Out in general society, one does not know who we will encounter. We don’t know if that person will be positive or negative. We don’t know if the person we encounter is having a good day or a bad day. So waking up and readying ourselves in a safe space as well as coming home to relax and unwind in a safe space is of paramount importance. I appreciate that I do have that here and that my guys have that.

Gotta go fill up my cup…..
