Why I Love the Bible

There are so many reasons why I love the Bible, the Word of God. This blog is a place where I provide little posts that take no longer than a cup of coffee to read through. And I would need to take an immense amount of time to explain all of my reasons. So I will try to sum them up as best as I can.

First, the Bible is not just one book. It is a collection of 66 books with a cohesive plot surrounding One character, Jesus Christ. The supporting cast includes many from Jews and Gentiles alike, including King David, Abraham, Adam & Eve, Paul, Matthew, John, Mary (there are a few so pick one you like), Rahab, Ruth, Luke, Philemon, and many more. And each of the books within the Book have a theme to them that fits into the overall theme. There is action, drama, suspense, romance, prophecy, and comedy, among other genres. If I could only have one book for the rest of my life, it would absolutely be the Bible.

Second, the Bible is educational for all levels of life. Dr. Chuck Missler said, “the Bible is shallow enough for a child to wade in, yet, deep enough for an elephant to bathe in.1” I have been reading the Bible since I began reading as a child. When I read that quote, I could not help but to think, “Wow! That truly sums up with fewer words than what I kept trying to explain to others.” Because it is a large book, many are intimidated by it. However, I encourage anyone to just begin. The first book within the Book that I recommend is the gospel of John. As a summary of John in one sentence, “Jesus is the sign-working Son of God who gives eternal life on the basis of His death and resurrection to all who believe in Him.2” After coming to believe in Jesus, I would recommend Romans, which is a letter that Paul wrote. The summary of that book within the Book would be, “Righteousness with God is given freely to all those who have faith in Jesus Christ for salvation according to God’s eternal plan.3” Then, you can move on from there. There are different ways to read the Bible, whether it be from beginning to end or jumping around to the different books. There is no specific formula to it. And there is so much to learn.

And lastly, the Bible is practical in daily life. As I study the Bible, I am learning how to walk the path of life that God intended for us to live. I study in a way that works for me though. It is not perfect, and my routine changes all the time. John Quincy Adams wrote in his diary, “Imperfect as my method is, I regret none of the time thus bestowed— At every perusal, I do add something to my knowledge of the Scriptures—something to my veneration of them, and I would hope, something to the improvement, which ought to result from this occupation, and which is the great motive to it.4” I look to the Scriptures for knowledge and improvement in navigating life. This includes how I interact with others and how I interact with God. I want to know Him more growing closer to Him everyday. The Bible helps me to do that in practical ways while also giving me historical events to read about and events to look forward to. Revelation is a book of the Bible that I have been reading and studying a lot lately. It is so fascinating and encouraging. My hope is in Jesus. This hope is not “wishful thinking.” Biblically, hope refers to something that is absolutely going to happen and that one is waiting on it to happen. Like when you’ve worked and your paycheck is due to drop into your bank account. It is going to happen.

This book is the most amazing piece of literature in my life. And I recommend not only the Bible, but also I recommend coming to Jesus. Talk to Him. He is there. Those who acknowledge His presence and believe in Who He IS will not be let down.

Gotta go fill up my cup…..

Oh, and here are some references for the things that I found. The last one is really interesting. I didn’t know JQ Adams read the Bible like that.
